Geoporn

Or maybe, “e-rock-ica?” Anyway, I just got this e-mail from Evelyn that is pure, well, Evelyn. The subject line is “Some of My Favorite Rocks.” The message is as follows:

+++

Here are photographs of some of my favorite rocks– the basalt and glass breccias we’ve been finding along fault zones. The colors don’t show up well in the photos, but two of the breccias are a pea green color and are very lovely. And just so this email doesn’t *just* have photographs of rocks, here’s one of me and the captain chatting at sunset the other night. Just a warning, though: I have over 1000 photos of rocks so far and only 50 or so of people and the ship. I better get busy taking pictures of things people are actually interested in seeing…

Best, Evelyn

  1. I'm amazed at the frequency of your contributions to the blog, considering the demands on your time. Post what you can, when you can. Don't worry (too) much about pleasing us.

  2. Nothing at all wrong with pics of interesting rocks, but its OK if you want to give us a bit of variety now and then :)

  3. I like good rock porn as much as anybody else, but is it really necessary to get so geological? It leaves nothing to the imagination! I think it's much sexier to tease a bit. Maybe cut out just a sliver to give a hint about the inside or show the rocks in sexy situations or with some daringly-cut coats of manganese.

    But I guess I'm just old-fashioned like that.

  4. "things people are actually interested in seeing" – Oh Evelyn! We are geeks and nerds and skepchicks. Of course we are interested in seeing pictures of rocks recently retrieved from the bottom of the ocean! From a chain of underwater volcanoes no less! What could be cooler than that?

    I like the top one best – very pretty.

    Thanks for the fascinating posts Evelyn.

  5. I know the difficulty of photographing rocks, it is hard to get the colours right. It is refreshing to see rock that is not archean greenstone or granodiorite.

    Thanks for the geoporn

  6. Personally, I prefer the rocks in my geo-porn to be au naturel, not cut off of larger pieces. Though I guess some people prefer that 'shaved' look, so I shouldn't complain too much.

  7. I work with drill core at an exploration project, as a result I have come across the ulitmate in geoporn, the Drilldo. It is a peace of core that by chance has tumbled around inside the drill bit and comes out even more phallic then a ten foot long rod of solid rock, which is the normal out put of our drills.

  8. Mmmm. Rocks…

    What'd make them perfect though is a bit of information about what they are. Their measurements, likes and dislikes and such.

  9. It always seemed indecent to take photo of those things. Next time I find one I will but out on the web some where but by then this thread will be long cold.
