Skepticism

MITAAH Event Next Week!

I apologize for not writing much this week. I had oral surgery on Monday and have been pampering myself this week since then. Also, I’ve been busy planning the first MIT Atheists, Agnostics, and Humanists event of the semester! The announcement is below, and we welcome people from the Boston area to come join us.

MIT Atheists, Agnostics, and Humanists Presents

“Secrets of the Psychics,” a documentary with James “The Amazing” Randi

April 12th, 2007
Room 66-160, See Campus Map
Documentary and Snacks, 6:30 pm
Discussion, 7:30 pm

*Are you an atheist, agnostic, or humanist?
Come meet others who think like you while enjoying good food and good company!

*Interested in learning more about atheism, agnosticism, or humanism?
All are welcome. Come ask questions or just to watch the film.

*Are psychic powers real or just the work of good magicians and scam artists?
We’ll watch a documentary with James Randi, a well-known magician and pseudoscientific debunker. Randi will explain how he thinks many psychics use psychology and magic tricks to fool people into believing they have real supernatural abilities. Evelyn, a former assistant to Randi and also a MIT graduate student, will lead the discussion along with Scott, another MIT grad student.

*How does belief in psychic powers relate to Atheism, Agnosticism, and Humanism?
We’ll discuss the similarities and differences between belief in psychic powers
and belief in supernatural religious phenomena.

  1. They're better that way. It's a scientific fact.

If y'all are ok with my non-MITness, I'll stop by. Randi is awesome, and I haven't seen that particular documentary. :)

  2. I am a first-year graduate student. I'm not sure how long I'll be at MIT, but it will be at least another four years. Potentially, I'll be here longer than that… but hopefully not too long!

Joshua: Everyone is welcome to attend this event!
