Anti-Science

Getting in touch with my past life (as a con artist).

I’ve been on Craigslist.org an awful lot lately. You see, I’m in the process of changing jobs, and so I’m looking around very carefully to find the absolute best possible position for me (and on that note, if any of you happen to have an open position for a creative writer in your ad agency/in-house marketing department/newspaper/science laboratory, don’t be shy).

In the meantime, I’m planning to freelance to pay the rent. I was intrigued by one particular gig listed on my local Craigslist:

Get in touch with your past life on TV

Do you believe you have lived past life? Do you feel you have issues in this life, and they were residual from past life? Do you want to experience your past life by hypnosis? New TV show is looking for people who want to experience thier past life, and share it on TV. The show is completely respectful, compassionate and genuine. The hypnosis is done by a nationally well respected Board Certified Hypnotherapist. (who is also super nice.) We want to help you explore your past life as we explore the possibility of the human mind. Ideal candiate would be female, physically and mentally healthy, articulate and intelligent, be able to handle the spot light, as well as a good communicator. Pay for the gig is 40 dollars for an hour to two of your time, if you are interested in doing a pre scripted motivational speech for about 30 to 40 minutes, the pay is 100 dollars for the two gigs. Great oppurtunity to get some great exposure, TV credits, and learning experience. Come join us and be inspired, and inspires others.

To apply, please send us your headshot, your general availability, (days of the day, morning/afternoon/early evening) and a detailed message outlining why you would be a good fit for the show. We would like to feature as many people as possible on our show, but the time slots are limited, so please apply ASAP.

We are also looking for people who believe Hypnosis can help them develop psychic or paranormal power, or wishing to use hypnosis for theraputic purposes.

This sounds perfect for me! I’m female, physically and mentally healthy, articulate, intelligent, LOVE the spotlight, and I communicate like a champ. The fact that the hypnotherapist is board-certified and “super nice” is quite an attractive offer — add in an extra $60 for a prewritten pep talk and I’m in.

Even if I don’t make it on, I hope they manage to reach a consensus on the “possibility of the human mind.” I for one believe its existence is possible, though events like this always give me pause.

  1. That's hilarious (: So, who were you in your past life? Marie Curie or Ada Lovelace? You'd better prepare your notes ahead of time…

  2. I was Houdini in a past life. We're both somewhat rankled to find that out, actually.

It's funny that you should mention job-hunting, though. I've been doing it, too! Even funnier, so has at least one of my co-workers, as well… *cough*

Yeah, anybody need to hire an electrical engineer who knows more about evolution than circuit design or programming? Anybody?

  3. My sister (cap'n chaos) and I once went to a psychic fair and paid some lady a couple bucks to tell us all about our past lives, so if you need a story or two, let me know.

Cap'n Chaos was a Rennaisance Lady & I was a 19th century Cockney whore, who died from a fall on the cobblestones (skull fracture). Amazing how our personalities carry over into subsequent lives, huh? Anyway, good luck, maybe you'll find out that you've been impregated by aliens.

  4. Rebecca – not that you know me from anyone but why look for another job? I've been reading your blog for a year now and it's clear that you have the rare gift of imagination, writing ability and brains to match. Why not go to graduate school and get a Ph.D. or strike out on your own and write the great American novel? Either way, from what I gather from your free-spirited postings about your life and world travels, you'd be a lot happier working for yourself than for someone else…

It's not that big of risk as you can always fall back on being a board-certified hypnotherapist…

  5. There has been a near identical sounding program on daytime UK TV (ITV, the main independent ad funded channel I think it was). The only difference was that it involved minor celebrities getting supposedly hypnotised and 'remembering' past lives, rather than members of the public. I accidentally caught it once while channel surfing and almost immediately had this overpowering urge to puke at the idiocy of it all and just had to switch off.

  6. Thanks digithead – sadly, I do need a full-time job to pay the rent, but I am trying to find more time to write. One of these days I will finish a book!
